Our Legacy

5:20 a.m. 1/19/26 29 degrees. I sit in my rocker on my small redwood porch underneath the overhang with a heater under my chair and a blanket over my lap. I am quite warm and content to sit in the quiet morning of this pristine wilderness. There is an incredible spirituality that comes with the silence of the snow. The breeze blows gently, and its chill touches my face. Once more, I sit in wonder at God's majesty.

5:40 I sip my coffee and know that he is here with me. I thank him for all he has blessed me with. I say my prayers and read the next chapter of the Bible. My thoughts drift back to a parenting seminar I was invited to last night. It has caused me to reflect on my own parents and the wonderful memory of them kneeling by their bedside each night in prayer. That memory is etched in my mind. It was a wonderful gift of faith that they gave me. For it is not the words we say to our children, which go unheard for the most part, but it is what they see us do and say to others. It is how we treat others and handle ourselves in stressful situations. Are we calm or are we easily angered? Do we throw our neighbor under the bus, or are we accountable when we make mistakes or get caught in a jam? What you do is what your child will do. Nobody is perfect, but it is these things and more that a child learns. And faith can be demonstrated in many different ways, not by words alone. We all learn to respect our creator. In the same way, children need to learn to respect their parents, and this is a good start.

6:07- Those on their way to the early shift drive by as the paper delivery car shines its headlights into the driveway next door, interrupting my thoughts yet comforting in a familiar way. I am surrounded by darkness, wrapped in God's glory. The fir tree, sitting two feet in front of me, moves gently under its snow-covered branches, with glistening teardrops hanging from its outermost limbs. How often God's gifts go unnoticed or taken for granted.

6:34 train cries out through the pines with its welcoming sound. The darkness begins to lift, and the shadow of skinny, tall tree trunks and finger-like branches reaches out with beauty and strength through the winter sky. They are illuminated by first light as the forest comes to life, and the titmouse begins her song. I hope all of you can find a little peace today in the gifts God has presented you with.

Until next time with Breakfast with God.
