5:00 a.m. - 44 degrees - 5/2/26 I woke to a breathtaking orange moon about to set in the west, leaving an orange glow on the lake beneath.
5:02 train cries out through the darkness with a haunting moan. This morning, the forest is alive with all my friends serenading in a natural surround-sound.
I sit on my small redwood porch now, still with the heater under my rocking chair
I say my prayers, talk with God, and thank him for this morning's glory. I read an excerpt from the Bible when I see a dark form out of the corner of my eye. I look up to a burly old raccoon crossing inches in front of me. Now, a Bluejay has come down to sit on a worn-out planter in front of me. It is very unusual for them to come this close. What a gift this day has been so far. A new day has been born. The old is left behind.
5:17, the American Robin has joined the ensemble this morning, with the Eastern Phoebe leading the group
I am reminded of a client who is up in age and has recently retired. She said to me, as many do, that since she has retired, she is feeling anxious and depressed. Age is creeping up on her, and her identity is gone. She is now looking at the last chapter of her life. She looks in the mirror and wonders who it is who's looking back. "Who am I now?" she asks. She says, " What's the use of doing anything when age is going to take over anyway and then death? It looks pretty gloomy in her eyes. I say to her, "What are you going to do about this?" She is taken aback by this. But the truth is, what are her choices? She can either stay depressed or live out the last chapter of her life in fullness and purpose. Psalm 25 says, Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. I think this is the answer for those entering the last chapter. And then at the end of it, there is God waiting with open arms for those who love him. Life is not over, just a new chapter beginning.
5:27 The darkness is lifting, and a new day begins. I am reminded of the 24th psalm, The earth is the Lord's and everything in it. It is a privilege to be in the Lord's world and commune with him and his creatures.
Until next time with Breakfast with God.
