11/16/2025; 5:00 a.m. and 53 degrees. I sit in my familiar rocking chair, under the overhang on my redwood porch. It rained last night. The air smells of moist, fresh earth. The Cedar Fir across from me moves ever so gently in the soft breeze. It is a lot warmer this morning, reminiscent of spring.
I say my prayers and thank God for all his blessings. Then I let him know my troubles and needs. The Cedar Fir moves delicately as if it were talking to me.
6:01 The darkness is lifting. I am having trouble staying focused this morning. I read the next chapter of the bible.
6:15 a.m., the squirrels are romping across my feet, unaware that I am even there. The crusty brown leaves lie like a soft blanket across the earth. Dark, thick clouds have piled up beautifully across the sky, unavailing a sun trying to show itself. However, the darkness has lifted just enough for me to see the split trunk of the Cedar Fir, just a few feet in front of me, and I thank God for all his artwork and my ability to see it.?
6:35 a.m. I put the seed down on the wet driveway and sit back to watch as the Bluejays gather in the Crab apple tree to my right, waiting for their turn to steal a peanut. But, oh, know! What's this? I look up from my reading, and there is a four-legged friend who has joined the party. How do they know when to come? The sparrows, the titmouse, and the mourning doves have all arrived for their share. The black squirrel is running back and forth with his cherished peanuts. He runs across the driveway to plant it in my garden for later, then back again, with his beautiful, shiny coat and his puffed-up tail waving in the breeze.
6:40 a.m. A lot of activity here this morning. It has been a blessing to watch God's creatures and be a part of their environment. They are at work all around you. Maybe today you might look up at the sky and notice a red-tailed hawk, a group of crows, geese, or any other kind of bird, and see God.
